“The supreme happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved -- loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.”

Marion hadn’t really been home much in the past couple days. Between seeing Alex, work, and everything else she’d had going on in her life, she was only home long enough to change, or she went right to bed to sleep. She’d been completely oblivious to whatever goings ons—if any—her brother had been up to. It wasn’t until she returned home Saturday morning that she actually noticed that something was up.

Andy had always had a soft spot for dogs, ever since he was a kid. In high school, he worked at a rehabilitation center for abused dogs that was near their house, but he could never bring the dogs home, because their father was allergic. Really allergic. Marion had always figured that Andy had grown out of the wanting a puppy phase after he graduated high school, but apparently, she was very wrong.

She had barely heard the door close behind her when she looked down to find a very mournful face looking up at her. Sighing slightly she reached a hand out to crouch down and pet him, when the dog jerked away slightly. Marion frowned for a moment, before holding her hand out, palm up, and letting him have a good sniff. She waited until he gave her hand a quick lick, before reaching over and scratching him behind the ears gently.

“Andy?” she began shouting back into the direction of her brother’s bedroom.

“Wha?” He sounded half-asleep—he’d probably just gotten in from work a few hours earlier—but she wanted to clear this up now.

“Why is there a puppy in my living room?”

“Shit.” There was some rustling as she scooped the puppy up into her arms and started to make her way towards the bedrooms. By the time she got there, Andy was leaning in the doorway, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. “His name is Murphy. I found him down at the rescue shelter a couple days ago.”

“You’re hanging out at a rescue shelter again?” Marion raised an eyebrow slightly, letting her brother take the puppy from her. Murphy seemed rather fond of this idea, his front paws landing hard on Andy’s chest as he reached up to lick at his face. A bright grin stretched across her brother’s face as he took over scratching the dog behind the ears.

“Well, not hanging out so much as—” he paused for a moment, before looking up at her sheepishly. “Look, this guy from work works there part-time during the day. Said that he was a good dog, but no one seemed to want him, and if they didn’t find someone soon, they were gonna have to put him down—they just didn’t have the space to keep him.” Which Andy had never liked—Marion knew this. “Look, I’ve already cleared it with the super—he says it’s okay to have pets. I’m good with dogs that need to be rehabbed, and I’ll take care of him, I promise.”

Marion watched her brother for a moment. He wasn’t giving her the puppy dog eyes outright, but—it was close enough. And Andy’s were just as lethal as the dog he was holding in his arms. She sighed slightly, before running a hand through her hair. “Just—make sure he doesn’t destroy the furniture, okay?”

A wide grin flashed across her brother’s face, and he leaned in to give her a warm kiss on the cheek. “Best little sister roommate ever. Seriously.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” she laughed, before turning and starting to make her way back towards her bedroom. “Tell me something I don’t know.”
